“Since childhood, the harp and visual arts have been parallel worlds to me. After years of exploring them separately, I am now finding the space where they meet.”
Nina Doevendans is a Dutch audiovisual artist and harpist based in Antwerp. Her practice is built on a dual foundation: a long history with the harp and creative expertise within the audiovisual sector.
Parallel Paths_ It all began at the age of nine with her first harp lessons. At the same time, there was always a passion for art; drawing and creating stories. For years, these two interests existed side by side. After studying Illustrative Design at Sint Lucas Antwerp, she grew into her role at Vertigo Creative Studio, where she is now a co-owner.
Over the past ten years, she has developed technical knowledge in animation, motion graphics, and interactive applications; ranging from visuals for live shows to touch-screen experiences for museums and exhibitions.
Parallelle Paden_ Het begon allemaal op negenjarige leeftijd met haar eerste harplessen. Tegelijkertijd was er altijd de passie voor kunst; tekenen en het creëren van verhalen. Jarenlang bestonden deze twee interesses naast elkaar. Na haar studie Illustratieve Vormgeving aan Sint Lucas Antwerpen, groeide ze door binnen Vertigo Creative Studio, waar ze inmiddels mede-eigenaar is. In de afgelopen tien jaar heeft ze technische kennis opgebouwd in animatie, motion graphics en interactieve toepassingen; variërend van visuals voor liveshows tot touchscreen-ervaringen voor musea en tentoonstellingen.
Between Strings and Motion_ Today, these worlds are truly converging for the first time. In her own work, Nina approaches the harp not in a traditional sense, but as an atmospheric and textural instrument. On her electric harp, she reinterprets existing compositions using pedals and effects, focusing on intonation and storytelling.
This search for atmosphere is also at the heart of her visual work. In her audiovisual installations, she often collaborates with musician, producer and sound technician Pieter-Jan Buelens, merging her visuals and his soundscapes into a single environment.
Tussen Snaren en Beweging_ Vandaag de dag vloeien deze werelden voor het eerst echt samen. In haar eigen werk benadert Nina de harp niet op een traditionele manier, maar als een atmosferisch en textuurrijk instrument. Op haar elektrische harp herinterpreteert ze bestaande composities met behulp van pedalen en effecten, waarbij de focus ligt op intonatie en storytelling. Deze zoektocht naar sfeer vormt ook de kern van haar beeldende werk. In haar audiovisuele installaties werkt ze vaak samen met muzikant, producer en geluidstechnicus Pieter-Jan Buelens, waarbij haar visuals en zijn soundscapes samensmelten tot één omgeving.
The Approach
Nina’s work is driven by curiosity and a search for ways to make atmosphere tangible. Whether she is behind the harp or building a digital universe, she is always looking for a specific rhythm or texture to help tell a story. Her goal is simple: to create work that momentarily lifts the viewer or listener out of their daily reality.
De Benadering_ Nina’s werk wordt gedreven door nieuwsgierigheid en de zoektocht naar een manier om sfeer tastbaar te maken. Of ze nu achter de harp staat of een digitaal universum bouwt, ze zoekt altijd naar een specifiek ritme of een textuur die een verhaal overbrengt. Haar doel is simpel: werk creëren dat de kijker of luisteraar even uit de dagelijkse realiteit haalt.
