EN_ Transcendence is an audiovisual installation presented as part of the Manifesta 12 Collateral Events in Palermo, Sicily. The work, featuring a three-part projection and an accompanying soundscape, was exhibited within the unique, historical setting of a crypt.
The installation explores the boundary between the tangible and the ephemeral. In addition to the immersive experience, a series of stills from the visuals were captured and framed, translating the digital textures into a static, physical form.

The idea for this work originated from an earlier project that I developed at the end of my studies at the St. Lucas Art Academy in Antwerp (Belgium). This is my first experience with audiovisual installations, although I have had an affinity with these for a long time. I gradually came up with an installation that consisted of an animated video projection with a soundscape. Following this, I immersed myself more deeply into the subject of the audiovisual, and amassed a lot of knowledge and experience in this sector. It was immediately clear to me that I wanted to continue with this. “Transcendence” arose from experiments and the philosophy of Plato. My aim is to develop an installation that is very contemporary on the one hand, and that aims to bring the spectators into a different dimension on the other.
As I said earlier, I have let myself be inspired by the philosophy of Plato for this work. In his writings, he speaks about two worlds: the sensory world and the world of ideas. In this first world, everything changes, and nothing remains the same, which Plato himself summarises as ‘everything becomes, nothing is’. This is the world of the senses, where the dimensions of space and time reign, and where consequently nothing is perfect. In the world of abstractions, on the other hand, there is perfect order and permanence; space and time do not exist there. Because of the immutability, this is the world where the real reality exists.
In short, I start my process from everyday, sensually perceptible objects, which take on a new and abstract form through photo editing and animation. These animations consist of a series of loops, which again refer to the perfect order and permanence in the theory of Plato. The image that repeats itself, and is always in motion in a calculated manner.
In addition, it is also important for me that the work is timeless. The intention is that you, as a spectator, should enter the room and then end up in another dimension. It allows you to briefly forget all the daily stimuli around you. (It allows you to reflect on yourself from the moment you approach the installation.) All of this is accompanied by a soundscape that reinforces the images and the atmosphere.
The music has been specially composed for the installation, so that there is not only a stimulus for the eyes, but also for the ears. A feeling of meditation, contemplation arises, but also a slight feeling of being in a trance.
As an audio-visual artist, you are able to stimulate multiple senses, and it is important for me to thereby create a certain feeling or atmosphere. We live in a busy and demanding society, a society that is always in a hurry. Where individuality has become important. Where personal development places higher demands on yourself. It is a time in which we keep going, we ‘must’ do more and more, and we want to go further and further. But there is hardly a moment left to reflect: Where am I? What do I want? Who am I? What do I feel?
We sometimes have the feeling that we are stuck in a world in which we have to constantly move forward.
(We push ourselves too far, and never take the time to quietly think about ourselves.) I want to create a new environment in my work. (One that cannot really be described in words, and about which you cannot easily draw conclusions.) A moment to just dream away, and escape the reality of daily being. The combination of the music and the images works on the mind, and allows you to stand still for a moment in the here and now.
When I was designing the installation, I deliberately opted to work with projection. The installation consists of three screens, each with a projector. The screens are scattered throughout the room. The intention is that people can walk around them.
Projection consists of light. The light source of the projector shines from one side of the room to the screen on the other side. This creates an additional feeling of space. It is important here that the public not only looks at a screen or an image, but that they become aware of the environment in which they are standing.
This also applies to the soundscape. The speakers are scattered around the room. The music is clearly audible at every position, and you have the feeling of being in the middle of it. The whole cycle of the installation lasts 3 minutes, and discreetly repeats itself.
NL_ Transcendence is een audiovisuele installatie die werd gepresenteerd als onderdeel van de Manifesta 12 Collateral Events in Palermo, Sicilië. De installatie, bestaande uit een drieledige projectie met een bijbehorende soundscape, werd geëxposeerd in de unieke, historische setting van een crypte.
Het werk verkent de grens tussen het tastbare en het vluchtige. Naast de fysieke installatie is een serie van ‘stills’ uit de beelden vastgelegd en ingekaderd, waarbij de digitale texturen worden vertaald naar een statische, fysieke vorm.

Het idee voor dit werk is ontstaan uit een eerder project dat ik aan het einde van mijn studie aan de Kunstacademie St. Lucas in Antwerpen (België) heb ontwikkeld. Dit is mijn eerste ervaring met audiovisuele installaties, hoewel ik hier al lange tijd een affiniteit mee heb. Geleidelijk aan ontstond er een installatie die bestond uit een geanimeerde videoprojectie met een soundscape. Daarna verdiepte ik me verder in het audiovisuele en deed ik veel kennis en ervaring op in deze sector. Het was me meteen duidelijk dat ik hiermee verder wilde gaan. “Transcendence” is ontstaan uit experimenten en de filosofie van Plato. Mijn doel is om een installatie te ontwikkelen die enerzijds zeer eigentijds is en anderzijds de toeschouwers in een andere dimensie wil brengen.
Zoals ik al eerder zei, heb ik me voor dit werk laten inspireren door de filosofie van Plato. In zijn geschriften spreekt hij over twee werelden: de zintuiglijke wereld en de wereld van de ideeën. In deze eerste wereld verandert alles en blijft niets hetzelfde, wat Plato zelf samenvat als ‘alles wordt, niets is’. Dit is de wereld van de zintuigen, waar de dimensies van ruimte en tijd heersen, en waar bijgevolg niets perfect is. In de wereld van de abstracties daarentegen heerst er een perfecte orde en bestendigheid; ruimte en tijd bestaan daar niet. Vanwege de onveranderlijkheid is dit de wereld waar de echte werkelijkheid bestaat.
Kortom, ik begin mijn proces met alledaagse, zintuiglijk waarneembare objecten, die door middel van fotobewerking en animatie een nieuwe en abstracte vorm aannemen. Deze animaties bestaan uit een reeks loops, die opnieuw verwijzen naar de perfecte orde en bestendigheid in de theorie van Plato. Het beeld dat zichzelf herhaalt, en altijd op een berekende manier in beweging is.
Daarnaast vind ik het ook belangrijk dat het werk tijdloos is. De bedoeling is dat je als toeschouwer de ruimte binnenkomt en vervolgens in een andere dimensie terechtkomt. Het stelt je in staat om alle dagelijkse prikkels om je heen even te vergeten. (Het stelt je in staat om vanaf het moment dat je de installatie nadert over jezelf na te denken.) Dit alles gaat gepaard met een soundscape die de beelden en de sfeer versterkt.
De muziek is speciaal voor de installatie gecomponeerd, zodat er niet alleen een prikkel is voor de ogen, maar ook voor de oren. Er ontstaat een gevoel van meditatie, contemplatie, maar ook een licht gevoel van trance.
Als audiovisuele kunstenaar kun je meerdere zintuigen prikkelen, en het is voor mij belangrijk om daarmee een bepaald gevoel of een bepaalde sfeer te creëren. We leven in een drukke en veeleisende samenleving, een samenleving die altijd haast heeft. Waar individualiteit belangrijk is geworden. Waar persoonlijke ontwikkeling hogere eisen aan jezelf stelt. Het is een tijd waarin we doorgaan, we steeds meer ‘moeten’ doen en steeds verder willen gaan. Maar er is nauwelijks nog een moment over om na te denken: waar ben ik? Wat wil ik? Wie ben ik? Wat voel ik?
We hebben soms het gevoel dat we vastzitten in een wereld waarin we constant vooruit moeten.
(We drijven onszelf te ver, en nemen nooit de tijd om rustig na te denken over onszelf.) Ik wil in mijn werk een nieuwe omgeving creëren. (Een die niet echt in woorden te beschrijven is, en waarover je niet gemakkelijk conclusies kunt trekken.) Een moment om even weg te dromen, en te ontsnappen aan de realiteit van het dagelijks bestaan. De combinatie van de muziek en de beelden werkt in op de geest, en stelt je in staat om even stil te staan in het hier en nu.
Toen ik de installatie ontwierp, heb ik er bewust voor gekozen om met projectie te werken. De installatie bestaat uit drie schermen, elk met een projector. De schermen staan verspreid door de ruimte. Het is de bedoeling dat mensen eromheen kunnen lopen.
Projectie bestaat uit licht. De lichtbron van de projector schijnt van de ene kant van de ruimte naar het scherm aan de andere kant. Dit creëert een extra gevoel van ruimte.
Het is hierbij belangrijk dat het publiek niet alleen naar een scherm of een beeld kijkt, maar zich bewust wordt van de omgeving waarin het zich bevindt.
Dit geldt ook voor de geluidsomgeving. De luidsprekers zijn verspreid over de ruimte. De muziek is op elke plek duidelijk hoorbaar en je hebt het gevoel er middenin te staan. De hele cyclus van de installatie duurt 3 minuten en herhaalt zich onopvallend.
